A city where the white smoke of the Vatican rises above streets thronged with chic boutiques, boisterous trattoria and extraordinary restaurants. Where priests scoot past on mopeds and nuns pop out of gelatteria. Where the roar of the Colosseum crowd seems still to hang in the air.

Wherever you go in Rome, you’re following the footsteps of the most influential civilisation the world has ever seen. Comparatively untouched by the World Wars, the Caput Mundi (“Capital of the World”) retains an architectural and artistic lineage stretching faultlessly back to 753 BC, when, according to tradition, twins Romulus and Remus founded the place after being suckled by a wolf.

It houses some of the most famous (and best preserved) buildings, statues and monuments on earth – the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Circus Maximus, the Catacombs – and is an extraordinary repository of art, with almost 40 museums and galleries displaying an unparalleled collection of treasures. Its parks and gardens stretch for miles: beautiful open spaces, the regimented gardens of villas, ancient chariot courses – all welcome distractions after the volcanic hustle of packed streets and buildings.

Football fans will revel in the cradle of “il bello gioco” (the beautiful game) – the Stadio Olimpico, home to SS Lazio and AS Roma, and site of the 1990 World Cup Final. While the fashionista will find that you don’t have to go to Milan to run with the smart set: Rome is home to Bulgari and Fendi and houses a complete set of Beverly Hills-style boutiques along its super-trendy Via dei Condotti.

Why not splash some cash here before joining the throng on a summer outing to Ostia, Rome’s very own city beach town by hiring a car in Rome? Head for the Via Ostiense, the Via del Mare or the avenue Cristoforo Colombo and you’ll find you can drive straight to the ocean without exiting city limits!

If food is your thing, Rome will more than satisfy: as befits any cosmopolitan city, it has a restaurant, bar or trattoria for every whim. You’ll find everything from A-list exclusivity to simple rustic brilliance, five course meals in the shadow of the Presidential palazzo, wholesome snacks in colourful backstreet cafes.... Or go out on a limb and try some classic Roman cuisine offal – after all, when in Rome...

An Introduction

Imagine a city where there are 1,000 year old monuments on roundabouts. Where else could you hire a car and drive around buildings, parks and places that have been there since before most other European cities were even founded.
